Remembering George P. Mitchell

Remembering George P. Mitchell Blog Entry Image

He’s known worldwide as the “father of fracking,” but residents here know him best as a pioneer and environmentally minded developer who founded The Woodlands community on 27,000 wooded acres located 30 miles north of Houston. Tomorrow we all have an opportunity to celebrate his life and legacy.

On Thursday, August 8, a memorial tribute service will be hosted in his honor at his late wife’s namesake venue, The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. The event will celebrate George P. Mitchell’s contributions to science, energy and the environment as well as feature a moving performance by The Houston Symphony. The tribute is open to the public.

Gates open at 6 p.m. and the service will begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and continue until 9 p.m. Preferred parking is available in the Gold Lot parking garage, and tickets are not required.

Ask and You Shall Receive!

Ask and You Shall Receive! Blog Entry Image

We’ve been overwhelmed this week with people from coast to coast who heard of our guest service experience involving red M&Ms and bacon – we have loved hearing from all of you and glad you’re finding humor and joy in our commitment to exceed guest expectations!

If you’re just catching up on this viral sensation, here’s the dish: New Braunfels resident Dustin Wray was our guest last weekend. When he made his hotel reservation a month prior, he thought it would be funny to type in a hilariously ridiculous request in the special comments section. It went something like this:

“Three red M&Ms on the counter. Not packages, just three single M&Ms. One for me, one for my girlfriend and one to split if we get hungry late at night. And a picture of bacon set on the bed. I love pictures of bacon.”

As he and his girlfriend entered their guestroom he was confused about the red chocolates sitting on the desk. However, when he saw the nicely framed photo of bacon placed on the bed, it all clicked and they spent the rest of the weekend laughing about it. Following their stay, Mr. Wray posted photos and a description of what happened on Reddit and Imgur and it all went up, up and away from there.

Like we said…ask and you shall receive! We are in the guest services business after all, and if that means doing something atypical to bring a guest some joy…heck, we’ll play!

We are so proud of our guest services team for making this one-of-a-kind request happen. Front Desk staffers Kyle Devery and Bastian Gabriel are the faces behind this international Internet buzz – together they reviewed the special comment, headed to the kitchen, snapped a photo of the freshly sizzled bacon, located a frame on Kyle’s desk, grabbed three red M&Ms from the kitchen and decked out the room according to Mr. Wray’s direction prior to their arrival.

We’re quite certain this story will have some people plotting an unusual special comment for their next hotel reservation -- and if that next stay happens to be with us, just be careful what you ask for. Chances are it might happen.*

I Scream, You Scream…

We all scream for ice cream! There are few things more nostalgic than ice cream, especially during these warm summer months. Perhaps that’s why this month is dubbed National Ice Cream Month!

National Ice Cream Month is held each year in July, and you may be surprised to hear it was made official in 1984 by President Ronald Reagan. According to Wikipedia, he also named the third Sunday of the month National Ice Cream Day.

President Regan realized ice cream was serious business, seeing as 90 percent of the American population consumes the frozen treat. He stated these two events – Ice Cream Month and Ice Cream Day – are events that should be observed with “appropriate ceremonies and activities.” Well, don’t mind if we do!

So how will you be celebrating this month and with what flavors? Will you be going just plain vanilla or will you step it up with Rocky Road? Perhaps you’ll enjoy it in a split or as a root beer float….in a bowl or straight out of the pint? Let us know what floats your ice cream boat!

Dressing You in Patriotic Hues!

The Fourth of July is all about celebrating – celebrating our freedoms, celebrating fun and, let’s be honest, it’s a little about celebrating the nation’s color scheme of red, white and blue. So how will you be wearing the patriotic hues?

If you’re still on the hunt for the perfect Fourth of July ensemble, look no further than down the street to Market Street where retailers abound with accessories, dresses, tanks and shoes in the reds, whites and blues!

Market Street recommends the following options:

Charming Charlie – wear all white and accessorize with a red belt, a blue tote, a star spangled heart ring, blue and white flip flops or a red necklace.

Ann Taylor – go nautical with tans, whites, navys and gold for a classic July 4th look.

Langford Market  -- pick a floral fabric in red or blue hues and create a light, fun, girly look for the holiday.

For more ideas and detail from Market Street, visit their blog or see what’s happening in stores today at 9595 Six Pines Drive.

A *Really* Sweet Summer Camp

Too bad this one is for kids! Schakolad Chocolate Factory is hosting a series of three-day summer camps that might make Mom jealous – a chocolate camp!

At Schakolad Chocolate Factory, children will learn how chocolate transforms from the cacao bean to a chocolate bar as they learn the skills of a master chocolatier. They will have the opportunity to use the skills they learn along with their own personal creativity to design wonderful chocolate masterpieces they can take home (bonus for the rest of the family!).

During the three days they will learn to make a chocolate bar, from cacao bean to bar, make 3-dimensional chocolate shapes and then finally design their own creations.

Schakolad Chocolate Factory is located at 1500 Research Forest Drive, Suite 130. Camps are offered most weeks through August 15 and take place either in the morning from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or in the afternoon from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Are you – we mean your kids – interested? For more info, click here.

What other fun camps have you heard about?
